History of our main manufacturers:
Avery

The company Avery was founded 1731 in Birmingham, U.K. In 1818, William and Thomas Avery took over the company with a worldwide expansion as consequence. The weighing technology was invented, developed and improved. Avery followed the complete evolution from mechanical machines to electronic and pc.
William and Thomas Avery were related to Joseph bundles and inherited its death in 1813, a balance company. As from approximately 1818 the company has been confessed under the name W&T Avery.
The name can be found on weights for coins accounts dating from 1940. In 1885, they had 3 factories: Atlas Works at West Bromwich, Mill Lane works in Birmingham and Moat Lane Works, Digbeth also in Birmingham. In 1894, the company became a nameless company and evolved to the well-known Soho Foundry in 1897. Several departments were started up in several cities and several companies in line were gradually taken over, in some cases under their original name. The company was taken over in 1979 by GEC and in 1993, GEC also took over Berkel and this way name Avery-Berkel was introduced. In 2000, the company was taken over by the American company Weigh-Tronix, that already owned Salter, the name became, Avery Weigh-Tronix.
Berkel

1898
For years, the young Dutch butcher Wilhelmus Adrianus Van Berkel tried to combine his trade as a butcher with his passion for engineering. Finally, after many attempts, he brought together two simple but ingenious ideas: a concave blade, which precisely reproduces hand/knife movements, and a mobile plate that slides towards the blade. The slicer was born.
On 12 October 1898, in Rotterdam, Van Berkel founded the world's first slicer factory.
1899
The first year of activity of Van Berkel's Patent Company Ltd closed with the delivery of 84 slicers, an orders book for 10 units and a dividend of 3.5%.
1908
The leading company on the domestic market, Van Berkel began to expand abroad. Here too, success was immediate.
The commercial year 1907/1908 closed with 2,734 units sold, of which approx. half went to the United Kingdom and its colonies. However, Berkel slicers were also sold in Russia, the Dutch Indies, China, Egypt, Mexico, South America…
1910
Faithful to its innovative spirit, Van Berkel's Patent Company Ltd was the first company in the world to introduce a delayed payment system.
1914-1918
During the first world war, production diversified. Van Berkel's Patent Company Ltd. started to produce lathes and even airplanes for the Dutch government.
1918
The core business was supplemented with scales, which gave the company a new impetus during the difficult period between the two world wars.
1945
After the Second World War the company expanded, with factories and commercial offices in Europe, the United States, South America and Africa.
1993
Following the merger with Avery, Berkel became part of the multinational English group, GEC, under the banner Avery Berkel Ltd.
2004
Two managers from Avery-Berkel, Mauro Amadei and Vincenzo Baldi, decided to purchase the Berkel brand and relaunch it worldwide. With all the experience and know-how acquired by a business that has been first in the field for more than a century - and with the dynamism provided by major investments - Berkel was ready to write a new chapter in its history.
2005 - ...
Launch of new Berkel models: an entire range of slicers and equipment for processing food products. Machines that represent a sound investment for private individuals and companies: safe, hygienic, reliable, and now also characterised by an extraordinarily innovative design. Italian Style merges with Berkelism values, and enters the food equipment sector.
